Smith explores in a remarkably honest and refreshing way, how, as a Christian, he often feels uncomfortable fully identifying with the church and the wider world, because of his questioning and restlessness. For Professor Smith, this state of disconnection, as he calls it, is commonly experienced, but is expressed in our both struggling with, and being profoundly blessed by God.

Developing the theme, he explores conventional topics of Christian meditation in nine chapters – conversion, faith, Christ, prayer, forgiveness, scripture, church, growth, and victory. In short, Professor Smith recommends a path to well-being that, in walking with Christ, holds a tension between disconnection, on the one hand, and claiming a place of belonging, peace, and stillness, on the other. Holding this tension we find authentic and deep communion with others, and with God, having in mind the ultimate goal of more fully accepting the liberating love and power of God and Christ in our lives.Steven R.

Smith is Professor of Political Philosophy and Social Policy at The University of South Wales. As well as having an international academic reputation in the fields of social ethics and social justice, Professor Smith has been a Christian for over thirty years. Since being dramatically converted in his late-teens, he has worshipped, preached and been in leadership roles in various churches since. He is also a media commentator on contemporary issues and their bearing on Christianity and wider spiritual matters.
